Zebra Mice Care

General Information:
Lemniscomys barbarus is the smallest, and most commonly kept species of Zerba mouse in the exotic pet trade. Zebra mice are a small murine rodent; also referred to as African striped grass mouse, and sometimes Barbarys. They're commonly found in bushlands and grassy areas throughout Northern Africa.
By far their most distinctive feature is their dark and light stripes which extend from head to tail.
They're omnivorous rodents who usually display diurnal or crepuscular behaviour. They have a lifespan of up to roughly 4 years.

Care:
Housing/Enrichment:
It's best to housed zebra mice in a well-ventilated glass tank 4ft by 1ft would be appropriate. They allow for plenty of suitable substrates, and are also secure enough to keep your mouse safe and enclosed so they can't escape.
As Zebra mice commonly live in grasslands. It's a good idea to provide nesting substrate such as hay and straw to mimic their environment as close as possible. Provide plenty of secure hides, houses, and other places for your zebra mice to hide. Remember, mice are prey animals and can feel threatened when exposed.

Socialising:
Zebra mice aren't always possible to tame and should only be handled by someone experienced with exotic small mammals. They're generally considered to be a look-but-don't touch animal but may become more affectionate with age.

Zebra mice will usually cohabit in small groups. It's important to keep a keen eye on their behaviour towards each other as some can become aggressive.

Diet:
As an omnivorous rodent, Zebra mice require both plant and animal materials to stay healthy. In the wild, Zebra mice would eat a varied diet. The majority of diet would contain seeds and grain, with occasional insects, fruits, and vegetables. You can also provide dried flowers, herbs, and leaves. You could provide a high-quality mouse food mixed in with wild bird food.
